Sweetly Naive

One of the eBay searches I follow is for memorabilia from the union my dad was in when I was a kid. That union no longer exists on its own. It was the product of many mergers that ended up with it being a local in the Steelworkers. I mostly see pins and matchbooks. I’ve bought some of those. I also managed to get a pretty cool old watch and a plastic tray with two decks of playing cards.

Every so often, I see this pin go up for sale. It was the pin of the seller’s grandparent’s pin from the 30s. It’s a neat little artifact for your own family. It’s not really worth much on the open market, though. They’re generally trying to sell it for about $200. Maybe there’s a darker motive than I’m willing to consider, but to me, it feels for all the world like a thing where either simply because it’s old, or belonged to their grandparent or something like that, they believe it could be worth that kind of money. It feels like a thing where they value it and, therefore, think other people will.

Comments systems

I think it’ll be a rare thing to get much in the way of comments here on my actual site. Getting them on facebook, twitter, or even tumblr all seem more likely, but just for reference, I implemented a Facebook based comments system here so that people don’t have to register just to use this site. I hid the standard wordpress comments, but if for some unimaginable reason, there’s an outcry to provide both, I can unhide that. 🙂

And people say I’m being dramatic when I say we’re a police state already…
